About this place
When a hearty midday meal is in order, freshly fried chicken with a fragrant crust or sweet-and-sour pork with a bright glaze makes for an appetizing centerpiece. Rozan Yume, a Chinese restaurant in Kisshoin in Kyoto's Minami Ward, has built a loyal following around its classic midday meal sets. The A Lunch with fried chicken and the B Lunch with sweet-and-sour pork both come neatly assembled with rice, soup, salad, pickles, and a choice of dessert or iced coffee to finish. Diners can also opt for the C Lunch featuring stir-fried pork, egg, and vegetables, or select the daily special for a rotating main dish.
Beyond the staple set meals, the menu caters to cravings for classic neighborhood Chinese noodle-and-rice pairings. Aromatic wok-tossed fried rice paired with a soy-sauce-based mini ramen, or combinations featuring tenshinhan (crab omelet over rice) or chukahan (meat and vegetable stir-fry over rice), offer quick and satisfying comfort. An extensive à la carte selection spans braised skin-on pork belly (dongpo pork) and shredded pork with green peppers to fried specialties like small prawn fritters and spring rolls, easily accommodating shared family-style dining. Sweet endings include almond jelly and candied sweet potatoes that pull into delicate sugar threads when lifted from the plate.
Inside, counter seating forms the core of the calm, unhurried dining room, making it welcoming for solo visitors at lunch. A dedicated free parking area on the south side of the building also makes stopping by convenient for drivers on the road. From substantial midday sets to an array of evening à la carte plates, Rozan Yume delivers solid, unpretentious Chinese home-style cooking.
